Accountants in Horsham
Horsham district has more active businesses than any other part of West Sussex apart from Mid Sussex, which has the same number, and its economy is dominated by small firms. It is also a largely rural district whose residents often commute out for work. This page is for tradespeople, farmers and rural businesses, landlords and people with a side business alongside a job elsewhere. If you get in touch, we will read what you need and look for a local accountant who may be able to help, with no promise of a match.
Small firms, rural trades and commuters
West Sussex County Council's economic strategy evidence report gives Horsham district 7,800 active businesses in 2022, from ONS Business Demography, level with Mid Sussex as the highest count in the county. Horsham District Council's employment topic paper for its Local Plan examination, published in March 2026, describes an economy dominated by small firms, complemented by a small number of large employers. It also says Horsham town accounts for almost 40% of all jobs in the district and that Horsham is a net exporter of labour, meaning more residents travel out to work than come in.
The county report shows which trades stand out. Other services employ 1.6 times the England share, agriculture, mining, utilities and waste 1.5, real estate 1.4 and construction 1.3. In practice that means builders, electricians and other trades, estate and letting businesses, farms and land-based firms, and personal service businesses such as hairdressers and repair shops. When it secured Rural England Prosperity Fund money in 2022, the council noted that the majority of the area is rural, and its 2025 economic prospectus names the land-based sector, including farming, as a priority.
Council, licensing and local help
Horsham District Council covers small business rate relief on its property reliefs page. It says a property with a rateable value of £12,000 or less pays no business rates, with relief tapering above that, and it outlines the changes to reliefs and multipliers from April 2026.
The council's HMO pages do not set out the licensing criteria in detail, and we found no sign of an additional or selective scheme in the district. Mandatory HMO licensing applies nationally, so landlords with shared houses should confirm the position with the council directly.
For free support, the West Sussex Growth Hub is run by the county council and the Sussex Chamber of Commerce covers the whole county.

How to judge an accountant
Because accountant is not a protected title in the UK, the name alone tells you little about training. Chartered accountant, on the other hand, is a protected title that the institutes control through their Royal Charters and rules, which is why it makes sense to ask a Horsham accountant about their membership.
Find out, too, which body oversees their money laundering checks. Anyone providing accountancy or tax services must be supervised by HMRC or a professional body, and trading while not registered is a criminal offence.
Ask for a written fee and a clear description of what it covers, such as whether it includes bookkeeping or just the year end return. If you will come into Making Tax Digital, ask which software they support.

Common questions
Does a Horsham commuter who rents out a flat need a tax return?
According to GOV.UK, rental income above £2,500 means registering for self assessment, while between £1,000 and £2,500 you contact HMRC instead. Up to £1,000, the property allowance may cover it. Mortgage interest only gets tax relief at the basic rate, so it is not deducted in full.
When do I need to switch to Making Tax Digital?
It depends on your gross income from self-employment and property, before expenses. Since 6 April 2026 it has applied above £50,000, from 6 April 2027 it applies above £30,000, and from 6 April 2028 above £20,000.
What are payments on account?
If you owed £1,000 or more through self assessment last year, HMRC usually asks for two advance payments towards this year's bill, due by 31 January and 31 July. Each is half of last year's tax. You do not have to make them if more than 80% of last year's tax was paid outside self assessment.
How does an enquiry through Accountant in Sussex work?
Accountant in Sussex is not an accountancy firm and does not give advice. You send an enquiry, we read it and, where we can, put you in touch with a local accountant, with no guarantee one is available. See [how it works](/how-it-works).
